BREAKING: Leo III, UNA’s beloved mascot passes

The University of North Alabama’s beloved mascot, Leo III passed away Thursday evening, May 2, at the George H. Carroll Lion Habitat on the campus.

Leo III and Una, an integral part of student life
Born in 2002, Leo and his twin sister, Una, who passed in June of 2020, moved into the George H. Carroll Lion Habitat in 2003 Both Leo III and Una were an integral part of student life and the community often making appearances off campus, at football games and other UNA-related events when they were young.
A UNA tradition since 1974, Leo III is the third male African lion to live on campus, succeeding Leo I and Leo II.
“Leo’s passing was peaceful, and his caregiver, Brandon Kutz, was by his side. It has been an honor to care for Leo III and his sister, Una. Being able to watch them grow from cubs into the majestic big cats they were has been the highlight of my career as a veterinarian.”

Remembering Leo III
According to UNA, a special memorial for Leo III will be planned to coincide with his birthday in November.
The Habitat will be available to those who would like to leave tributes or memorials.
