The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning Alabama residents to be prepared for temps to plummet Saturday night in North Alabama and wind chills to dip in the teens statewide beginning on Monday morning.

This is all occurring after temperatures throughout Alabama on Saturday, Dec. 13 are expected to reach the 60s.

Below are posts from the NWS Huntsville, Birmingham and Mobile offices predicting the coming frigid weather and warning people to prepare for the potentially-dangerous cold temps.

Cold weather tips

When it’s chilly, there are quite a few tips that you might not consider in order to keep everything running smoothly and healthily.

We’ve gathered a few key reminders as the temperatures begin to plunge from Saturday night to Sunday:

  • People: Limit time outside, be prepared for power outages and make sure to check on any elderly or other vulnerable friends + family during the freeze.
  • Pets: Keep pets inside as much as possible and limit their time outside. Keep them bundled up + dry!
  • Pipes: Insulate your pipes if you can + make sure to open your sink cabinets to expose the pipes to heated air. And don’t forget to disconnect your hoses + turn off any sprinklers!
  • Plants: Cover plants before the freeze begins to ensure they will keep some heat. Make sure you know your plants’ temperature thresholds.

And for Monday morning, be prepared to bundle up the kids for school!
