Celebrate Arbor Day in Alabama by planting a new tree

Alabama celebrates Arbor Day the last week of February, and there are several opportunities throughout the state to get a free tree to plant to commemorate the holiday.

Here are a few of the opportunities to get your own tree to plant this Arbor Day in Alabama:

Celebrate Arbor Day in Auburn

The City of Auburn Tree Commission will host its annual Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Kroger on Dean Road, the Auburn University Arboretum, Boykin Community Center and Wells Fargo on Opelika Rd.

Members of the Tree Commission will distribute Nuttall Oak and Dogwood seedlings to citizens free of charge while supplies last at these locations. Planting instructions will be included with the seedlings.

Tree giveaway in Phenix City

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is hosting a tree giveaway at Garrett Harrison Stadium in Phenix City Feb. 24. Here’s what to know:

Fairhope tree giveaway

Fairhope celebrates 40 years as a Tree City, USA member on Feb. 24. There will be 1,200 native bare-root trees given out to city of Fairhope residents.

Montevallo Arbor and Beautification Board/ Arbor Day Celebration

This year marks the 32nd annual Arbor Day Celebration in Montevallo. As a part of the Montevallo Tree City Experience tables will be set up outside where you can pick up bare root tree seedlings.

Sheffield Arbor Day Celebration

Sheffield was selected by the Alabama Urban Forestry Association as Alabama’s Tree City of the year for 2024. Dr. David West with the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service will present the City with a proclamation from Governor Kay Ivey, and tree seedlings will be given out to residents.

Winfield Tree Giveaway

The Winfield Tree City Board and Alabama Forestry Staff will be on hand to distribute trees and provide information on planting and care of trees.
