Celebrate National Voter Registration Day: How to register + what you need to know before Election Day

Tuesday, Sept. 17 is National Voter Registration Day across the country and with the 2024 Presidential Election less than two months away, we want to make sure you have everything you need to know before heading to the polls.

Keep reading to find out more about the nonpartisan civic holiday + how to make sure you are registered before the big day.

National Voter Registration Day

The holiday was first officially introduced in 2012 and according to the National Voter Registration Day organization, more than 5 million people have used the day to register to vote.

The day is used to encourage people to vote usually a month before the registration deadline. Events are held across the country at local parks, city halls, college campuses and more to assist people who want to vote in November.

How to register

If you can’t make it to any events Tuesday, that’s okay because you still have plenty of time to register before the election. Here’s some of the key dates you need to know for Alabama:

  • Oct. 21: In-person at local office registration; online; or by mail (postmarked)
  • Oct. 29: Request absentee ballot by
  • Nov. 4: Return absentee ballot in person
  • Nov. 5 (Election Day): Return absentee ballot by mail (received by)

To vote in Alabama, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Live in the State of Alabama
  • Be at least 18 years of age on or before election day

If you have a valid Alabama Driver’s License or valid Alabama Non-Driver’s Identification card, you can register online here. If you do not, you can download the registration form to fill out and mail in to your local Board of Registrars.
