The biggest and fastest BMX track in Alabama, Dothan’s Circle City BMX, is getting a makeover. Last year, Dothan City Commission began renovations on several of the park’s facilities including concessions and bathrooms.

Keep reading to check out the progress on this project so far.

About Circle City BMX

Since 1984, Circle City BMX has offered a 1,147-foot Alabama red clay track for both new and seasoned BMX racers alike. The track operates year round under the leadership of the nonprofit, The Circle City BMX Parent’s and Rider’s Association.

Circle City BMX is located at 201 Recreation Road in Westgate Park next to the softball complex.

Plans for expansion

Construction as of December 2022. (@circle_city_bmx on Instagram)

According to a report by WDHN last summer, Dothan City Commission entered into a $60,000 contract with a local architect company, Seay Seay & Litchfield Architects, to design new bathrooms and concession stands– citing that the old ones were just “too small, somewhat run down and not as compliant for people with disabilities.”

“We’ll put Seay Seay & Litchfield to do the design and go through the design process as quickly as we can. We’re going to try to get some construction going and try to get something built early next year.”

Andrew Love, General Services Director, from WDHN in August 2022

By expanding facilities to be larger and more accessible, they hope this will help Dothan attract and retain national events at the BMX track– such as the USA BMX Gold Cup Southeast division which will take place at Circle City in September 2023.

Progress as of March 2023

So what progress has been made since the start of this project? In this week’s City of Dothan newsletter by City Manager Kevin Cowper, an update shows the current state of construction including:

  • New concessions
  • New ticket windows
  • More restrooms
  • Covered patio
  • HVAC Yard

“The new concessions and restroom building will be equipped with a covered patio that will give visitors a place to sit and watch the races in a dry area sheltered from the sun.”

Kevin Cowper, City Manager, in last week’s City of Dothan Newsletter

While there is no official completion date yet, it looks like the project has made major progress and could be coming to a finish in the coming months. To stay updated on the City Circle BMX track, make sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
