As Alabamians, we already know exactly what makes Conecuh Sausage so special. Its secret blend of spices and delightful *snap* with every bite makes it a staple in many dishes and a fan-favorite across the state. Read on to learn more about the Alabama delicacy and its feature in popular food publication Eater.

Nationally recognized

Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner, mixed in a gumbo or eaten by itself, Alabamians love Conecuh Sausage. Now, Conecuh has garnered attention from popular foodie publication Eater.

With over 1 million followers on Instagram, it’s safe to say that Eater knows a thing or two about good eats and where to find them. Plus, they took home the 2022 National Magazine Award for Lifestyle Journalism at the annual awards ceremony put on by the American Society of Magazine Editors.

They were fascinated by Conecuh Sausage and its “cult-following” here in the state, so they dedicated an entire article to the meat. We don’t blame them one bit.

Where does Conecuh come from?

Before Conecuh Sausage hits your plate or sizzles in a biscuit, it all starts in Evergreen, located in South Alabama a little over an hour away from Montgomery.

Eater gave a special shoutout to the Conecuh Sausage plant’s welcoming “statue of a giant pig enthroned on a lawn chair armed with a grilling fork.” Just in case you needed another reason to visit.

The company got its start 75 years ago by Henry Sessions as a meat-processing facility and cold storage locker. After becoming known for his hickory-smoked sausages, he changed the name to Conecuh, relocated to its current spot in Evergreen and the rest is history.

Now, you can visit the company’s massive Conecuh Sausage gift shop that not only has the perfect photo op for your next road trip, but has all the Conecuh products you could dream of, unique gift items, home decor and hunting accessories.

Tastes like home

Eater said it best, “The Deep South doesn’t play around when it comes to pork.” From homemade lunches to game-days, Conecuh Sausage has an unmistakable smoky flavor with the perfect blend of spices.

“The company uses a secret blend of seasonings, and the Sessions family, which still owns the brand, has kept the recipe the same since Henry conceived it. Conecuh Sausage’s strength lies in its subtlety. Its flavor is mild and balanced, with flecks of red pepper to add buzz without overwhelming the palate. To many Southerners, it tastes like home, and done right, it can easily enhance a dish without throwing its flavors askew.”

The brand has even become the official smoked sausage and hot dog of the Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers and even the Florida Gators. We can’t all agree about football, but at least we have Conecuh Sausage to bring us together.

The six varieties of sausage aren’t the only way to enjoy Conecuh flavor, with bacon, hams, franks, seasoning blends and even turkeys in production as well. Every October, Evergreen also hosts a Conecuh Sausage festival with over 100 vendors, a car show and more.

Visit for yourself

Doesn’t all that reading about Conecuh make you want some for yourself? Luckily, we’re in the best state to fulfill those cravings. You can find Conecuh products at grocery stores like Publix and Piggly Wiggly, but if you can, visit the gift shop in Evergreen! Conecuh Sausage is cookin’ on the grill from breakfast through lunch, so you can try the freshest Conecuh available.
