Mobile’s first distillery has finally opened its doors, and they already have a product to sell on their shelves.

Deerfish Distilling Company started construction and remodeling at their location, 757 Government Street, in 2024. Their spot is within walking distance of Greer’s Downtown Market, Moe’s Original BBQ and the Garage.

It is Mobile’s first distillery, giving the city a more robust food, drink and entertainment scene.

The owners, two husband-and-wife duos, are Austin and Ashley Hallford and Lee and Emilie Hallford.

Austin left Mobile in 2010 to pursue a career in distilling, which is how he met Ashley. They spent years perfecting their craft, and they wanted to bring it back to Mobile Bay.

“Getting to move home and be the first craft distillers in Mobile? That’s the opportunity of a lifetime for us.”

Ashley Halford, Deerfish Distilling Co.

Deerfish Distilling’s space does not currently serve their drinks — except for events, one of which happened Aug. 23 for their grand opening — and is intended as an avenue to purchase their products. Right now, bottled spirits aren’t being sold, but they are in the works.

Not to worry, though: Deerfish is selling a vodka-based seltzer as their first alcoholic product. It comes in flavors like honeydew cucumber, satsuma peach and watermelon line — all intended to represent common tastes of the South.

“We are going to release a line of vodka-based seltzers using natural flavors that really speak to the south. We’d like to do a line of seasonal craft cocktails as well where we can utilize local produce to do special small-batch releases. A gin line will also likely be in the works, where we can source local botanicals to further highlight Mobile.”
