For months now, Dothan has been preparing for the City Center project—which, according to the City of Dothan, will be a “revitalization effort, the likes of which Dothan residents have never seen.”

The first phase of this project will officially commence with renovations to the Dothan Opera House and a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, January 16.

Dothan’s City Center project

According to WDHN, phase one kicked off with the demolishing of the Dothan Utilities building. Now, months later, the project’s contractor Brasfield & Gorrie approved the contract to start work on the opera house.

Since 1915, the Dothan Opera House has hosted many concerts, community theatre performances and conferences to the Wiregrass and beyond. As a Dothan native, I’ve attended my fair share of events and taken plenty of pictures at this historic building.

Now, the opera house is getting a makeover!

Expected upgrades to the historic building include new elements and additions in the following areas, according to WDHN:

  • Audio-visual upgrades
  • Back-of-house improvements
  • Event plaza
  • Expanded lobby
  • Lighting upgrades
  • New HVAC system
  • Outdoor dining space
  • Outdoor performance area

Growing up and attending events in the Dothan Opera House, I’m excited to see the “new and improved” version of one of my favorite hometown sites.
