Expect travel slowdowns on I-59 to vacation spots due to repairs in Northeast Alabama
Reading time: 1 minute

Traveling to vacation hotspots like Little River Canyon National Preserve, Chattanooga and Noccalula Falls?
Build in some extra time to get there, because of some I-59 emergency road repairs in Northeast Alabama.
According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, an emergency slab repair and replacement project on 13 miles of I-59 in DeKalb County begins this week.
The work, which is expected to be completed in September, will occur on the northbound and southbound stretch between Exit 205 at SR-68 in Collinsville and Exit 218 at SR-35 in Fort Payne.
Drivers should expect daily single-lane closures in either direction.
Future I-59 work in DeKalb and Etowah counties
The present work is only a short term fix. ALDOT is planning to completely reconstruct this segment of I-59 in two future projects as part of an ongoing effort to reconstruct most of the I-59 corridor in DeKalb County and northern Etowah County.
Construction for that work is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027.
