Extreme heat warning: Hottest temperatures of the year (so far) arrive across Alabama
Reading time: 3 minutes

Cities across the South and along the Atlantic Coast have been dealing with an extended period of severe heat.
You might think it’s just another summer in Alabama but either way, hot is hot. And there are several precautions you should take before spending any time outside.
Keep reading to see what you can expect from Tuesday’s heat, how to prepare for it + when we will start to see some relief.
Heat indices up to 112

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for most of the state through 9PM on Tuesday, July 29. But the northeast corner has been upgraded to an extreme heat warning from NWS.
Areas like Huntsville, Russellville and the Shoals could see a heat index of up to 112 degrees. Those areas neared triple digits in actual temperature on Monday.
While several areas saw their “feels like” temperatures reach triple digits already this week, Tuesday will feel even hotter. Other spots in Alabama forecasted to see heat indices of at least 109 include:
- Andalusia
- Eufaula
- Fort Payne
- Gadsden
- Jasper
- Mobile
- Montgomery
- Selma
- Tuscaloosa
How to beat the heat

It may seem overly simplified but the best way to beat the heat is to stay indoors with some air conditioning if possible. Make sure to check your local area for a cooling center if you need one.
Don’t forget to check in on the more vulnerable people in your life which includes children and the elderly. And make sure to bring any outdoor pets inside.
If you need to be outside, make sure to stay hydrated, whether you’re outside for five minutes or an hour. It’s also important to know the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Learn more about that from the National Weather Service.
Rain is on its way
Unfortunately, spotty showers throughout the day Tuesday are expected to just make things more miserable outdoors for the most part. The rain will just add to the humidity rather than bringing cooler temperatures.
However, more consistent rain is expected to arrive throughout the week which will give a little bit of relief from the heat.
Some heat indices will remain in the low triple digits through Thursday but most areas will be feel like below 100 with actual temperatures back in the high 80s.
