The historic K-1 Center in Fairhope is set for a massive renovation project to become the new home of a state-of-the-art facility for local business.

More than $6 million will be used to fund the renovations as the building will become the home of Hatch Fairhope.

“This Innovation Hub is going to supercharge our local startup scene, giving tech entrepreneurs the perfect space to dream big, innovate, and grow. South Alabama is gearing up to become a tech powerhouse, launching new industries and opportunities right here in our community.”

The goal of the project is to preserve the historic exterior of the K-1 Center while upgrading the inside with advanced technology + modern looks.

“Yesterday marked a significant milestone as the City of Fairhope celebrated the kickoff of the historic K-1 Center, the future home of Hatch Fairhope! This exciting project is the result of years of vision, collaboration, and investment. We are thrilled to introduce this tech-focused business incubator to the heart of downtown Fairhope.”

According to the Hatch Fairhope website, roughly 16,000 square feet of the building will be renovated.

It’s set to be a combination of co-working spaces, schools, classes and education programs not only in the medical sectors but in all technology sectors.

The building was first opened in 1925, being used as an elementary school for several decades.

It was owned by Baldwin County Schools until 2018 when it was purchased by the City of Fairhope after being vacant for nearly a decade.

“The K-1 Center holds cherished memories for generations of Fairhope residents, and while we say goodbye to its familiar walls, we look forward to the opportunities this space will bring to our community’s future.”
