The City of Montgomery has approved plans to temporarily feature a Ferris Wheel along the Capital City’s waterfront.

If successful, the city will consider making it a permanent attraction. Here is the plan.

According to a City of Montgomery news release, the Ferris wheel will be installed during Montgomery’s HBCU Classic Weekend, a major cultural and sporting event that draws residents and visitors from across the region. Rides will be free to the public, making the attraction accessible to everyone.

“Many people — both locals and tourists — have told us how great it would be to have an attraction like a Ferris wheel downtown. This pilot is our way of showing that we’re listening. We want to see how people respond, and if the interest matches the excitement we’ve been hearing, we’ll take that next step together.”

In November-December 2024, the City of Cullman successfully installed a Ferris wheel during its month-long Christkindlmarkt celebration.

Ferris wheels have also been installed for a limited time in Nashville, Atlanta and Panama City.

“If this works — and we believe it will — a permanent Ferris wheel or similar-level attraction could help Montgomery stand out.”
