A windy and dry forecast for the weekend has led the National Weather Service to issue a Fire Weather Watch across much of Alabama.

While the fire weather watch officially runs from 7AM to 7PM on Saturday, March 28, officials say outdoor burning is not recommended throughout the weekend. Some red flag warnings could be issued by Saturday morning.

The forecast shows humidity levels could dip below 20% in some places around Alabama with wind gusts of 25 to 30 miles per hour expected.

To help prevent any fires from starting, the National Weather Service provided some tips:

  • Avoid open flames or sparks
  • Keep vehicles off dry grass
  • Properly discard cigarettes

The Alabama Forestry Commission has also issued a Fire Danger Advisory, strongly discouraging any outdoor burning until conditions improve.

“The combination of these conditions creates a greater-than-average potential for outdoor fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer – and more of the agency’s firefighting resources – to contain and ultimately control. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.”
