Cooler temperatures have arrived across Alabama but during the summer, that usually means rain is nearby.

While it will not rain everywhere in the state, some spots could see some strong storms including heavy rain at times. That forecast was enough for the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Watch for almost all of eastern Alabama including:

  • Barbour
  • Bullock
  • Calhoun
  • Chambers
  • Cherokee
  • Clay
  • Cleburne
  • Coffee
  • Coosa
  • Dale
  • Elmore
  • Geneva
  • Henry
  • Houston
  • Lee
  • Macon
  • Montgomery
  • Pike
  • Randolph
  • Russell
  • Talladega
  • Tallapoosa

“Be alert if you live in a flood-prone area and experience heavy rainfall. If you come across a flooded roadway, do not cross it! While it may be an inconvenience, you are better off taking another route. That simple action can save your vehicle, and your life!”

NWS Birmingham

The flood watch is currently issued through Tuesday, Aug. 5.

The National Weather Service says there could be excessive runoff from the rainfall which might cause flooding in rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying locations. Extensive street flooding is possible.

Local officials are encouraging people to be prepared to move to higher ground when necessary + to avoid traveling across flooded roads.

Heavy rain caused flash floods across East Alabama over the weekend and a 22-year-old in Cleburne County died after being stranded in a vehicle in a flooded roadway.

“These events are deeply tragic and highlight just how quickly conditions can become deadly when floodwaters rise. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the young man who lost his life.”

Jon Daniel, Cleburne County Sheriff
