The WNBA has seen tremendous growth in recent years with new, young stars taking the spotlight—and for good reason.

But there are still several players who have been in the league for years who can’t be overlooked including Fairfield native + former Auburn player DeWanna Bonner.

On Saturday, May 17, Bonner took another step in her remarkable professional career, moving into third place on the league’s all-time scoring list. She now trails just Tina Charles—by 207 points—and the legendary Diana Taurasi.

Caitlyn Clark may be the biggest star in the WNBA and certainly on the Indiana Fever but Saturday’s game was about her new teammate.

Bonner, who has played for the Phoenix Mercury and the Connecticut Sun in the past, signed a one-year contract to play with the Fever this season. And the fans have welcomed her with open arms.

During Saturday’s game, Bonner knocked down a pair of free throws late in a blowout victory before exiting to a standing ovation.

“I kind of got a little bit emotional. To be in this moment, in front of a sold out crowd, in front of all this attention, and to have that moment, it’s pretty special to me… I’m just so grateful.”

After the game, Clark was asked about the moment.

“DB is somebody who is a Hall of Famer, a legend. Not only a good basketball player, but a great person, a great leader. The strongest voice in our locker room is hers, and it’s fun to have been around her and get to learn from her. I’m really happy she got to do it at the free throw line and all fans could go crazy and cheer for her, because she certainly deserved that moment.”

Bonner now sits with 7,489 career points and it’s likely she will move into the No. 2 spot on the all-time list before the end of the season if she stays healthy. Meanwhile, Taurasi’s record of 10,646 points remains well out of reach for anyone at this point.
