New $82M athletic complex coming to Gadsden

The city of Gadsden has officially broken ground on a massive project, bringing upgraded athletic facilities to the area.

A groundbreaking celebration was held Friday, May 1, signaling the start of construction at the nearly 29-acre site. The city hopes the upgraded facilities create a new sports + recreation destination for people across the region.

Gadsden Athletic Complex

The city wants to provide a year-round destination for athletics, providing indoor and outdoor facilities.

Once completed the complex will include:

  • 161,000 square feet of indoor athletics
    • 8 hardwood basketball courts with overlays for volleyball and pickleball
    • Family entertainment center with arcade games
    • Duckpin bowling, and sports simulators
    • Fitness center
    • Indoor aquatics center with competition pool and zero-entry leisure pool
    • Meeting and party spaces
  • 4 natural grass, 300-foot baseball and softball diamonds
  • 12 outdoor pickleball courts
  • Pavilions
  • Trails
  • Green space
  • Playground amenities
  • Parking

The city says the new facility is projected to host more than 100 events each year across basketball, volleyball, aquatics, baseball and softball, pickleball and non-sport meetings and events.

The Sports Facilities Companies (SFC) is partnering with the City of Gadsden on the project and will support the facility’s path to opening through planning, marketing, and operational preparation.
