There is nothing that brings a community together like shared love for a local cat.

In Gadsden’s case, this enthusiasm led to a cat being recognized as an official Lowe’s employee, a petition being made to fight back against corporate headquarters and a day being named in her honor by the city.

Mama Cat’s story

About five years ago, a black and white cat with striking green eyes took up residence at a Lowe’s home improvement store in Gadsden, the city resolution says. She was given the nickname “Mama Cat” by locals, who adored her instantly.

Eventually, Mama Cat was recognized as a vital member of the Lowe’s team, being named the “hardest worker” in her role as “Pest Control Quality Assurance.”

“Through her consistent presence, Mama Cat fostered a sense of goodwill, comfort and community connection, reflecting the unique character and spirit of the Gadsden community.”

At the end of January, she was named “Pet of the Day” by local station WBRC, just before the trouble surrounding Mama Cat began.

Community rallies for Mama Cat

The city resolution comes after Mama Cat was removed from the Lowe’s location by corporate headquarters due to “customer complaints,” AL.com reported.

She was rehomed with a local Lowe’s employee, according to the resolution, but many community members were upset to hear about her removal.

In response, one Gadsden resident created a petition on change.org asking Lowe’s corporate headquarters to reverse its decision.

“Mama has been a positive and incident-free presence at the store for a significant period of time and has become meaningful to both customers and employees. Her presence has contributed to a sense of community and goodwill that many shoppers associate with the Gadsden Lowe’s location.”

Rachel Lotfi, petition starter

In just three days, there have been more than 3,200 signatures in support of Mama Cat.

Some supporters shared heartfelt memories of going to Lowe’s to see Mama:

“This sweet Cat was the highlight of our trips to Lowe’s. It was the main reason we shopped Lowe’s as a family instead of going to a similar store that was closer…When my wife and kids come with, which they always did because of Mama the cat, we spent way more than what I was intending to alone. We even bought all new appliances once lol. The cat brought many people joy, including my family.”

“My daughter loved seeing her in the store every time that we would visit. She would always ask me if we could find the kitty cat so she can pet it. She made the store feel more welcoming and was just so fun to see her.”

Landon, change.org

“I have a mentally disabled daughter and getting to look for and see Mama cat is the highlight of every shopping trip to Lowe’s for her. This makes it easier for me to shop having a happier daughter in tow.”

Others showed a bit more passion:

“Mama has been doing her job, for free. All she asked for in return was a safe space and a meal. How many employees can you say that about? Sounds like she should be receiving Employee of the Year award, not being kicked out of her safe space. Shame on you Lowes, this is not a good look for you and there will be consequences. Boycotting Lowes until they reinstate Mama!!!”

Carter, change.org

“So help me God!! I will chain myself to the riding mowers out front and go on a starvation strike until that cat is brought back!!”

Ron, change.org

“KITTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Mama Cat Day: Feb. 3

Regardless of whether Mama Cat is allowed back on Lowe’s premises, she is well loved in her new home with one of her colleagues.

The mayor’s resolution was passed Tuesday, Feb. 3 by the Gadsden City Council, officially designating that day as “Mama Cat Day.”

“The City of Gadsden acknowledges the importance of recognizing moments and individuals, human or otherwise, that bring people together and contribute to the shared experience of our city.”
