For anyone who has been to Tuscaloosa for a fall gameday, you may have your own memories from the Waffle House on The Strip. One family didn’t need football season to find a special moment at the restaurant though.

Dr. Chelsea Wallace and her family took their usual trip to Waffle House on Sunday but once the jukebox was found, the trip turned into a memory that will last a lifetime.

‘They go above and beyond’

Chelsea Wallace said they are regulars at this Waffle House and have gotten to know some of the staff. Their kids are even greeted by names when they show up.

On this particular trip, the family got there earlier than usual on a Sunday and got to request some songs for the jukebox. A song from the movie Trolls started the show but when “Let It Go” from Frozen came on, Wallace said the whole restaurant got excited.

Wallace captured the moment between her youngest daughter and Shay, one of the employees at Waffle House. However, what was happening off the screen was just as special as the rest of the staff joined in.

“Shay came around the counter and started doing the whole performance. The only thing I wish I had done different was panned the camera to show everyone. I wish everyone there could have gotten credit. Everyone was there still doing their task but singing along. It was pretty cool.”

Wallace said this wasn’t a surprise to see as the staff has always gone above and beyond for them, which is why the family keeps going back. And going forward, this may have to be a regular part of their weekly visits.

National attention

The next day, the video was shown on The Today Show which came as a surprise to the family. Wallace said they found out it was going to be on NBC at the same time everybody else did: the moment it aired.

“It’s definitely neat and it’s been a whirlwind. We had no idea it was going to be on the Today Show until it was being aired. When everyone else saw it is when we knew about it as well. That was not how you expect to start your Monday.”

An interview with Good Morning America happened shortly after that. Wallace said she’s loved the opportunity to talk about her family’s experience but also to shine the spotlight on the people of Tuscaloosa.

“It’s been great to talk to people to what I hope is giving recognition to A) a really awesome city here in Tuscaloosa. And B) the team at this Waffle House. This wasn’t like a one time, go to this Waffle House, have a good experience. We continue to go back because they give a great experience every time.”
