Happy 195th Birthday to UNA: Celebrating the oldest four-year public university in Alabama

On Monday, January 13, The University of North Alabama (UNA) proudly celebrated its Founders Day, marking an incredible 195 years since the establishment of the university.

This big milestone not only honors UNA’s rich history and achievements but it also sets the stage for an even grander celebration just five years away, the bicentennial.

As the oldest four-year public university in Alabama, the University of North Alabama’s 195th birthday is a moment of pride and excitement for the Shoals community.

Some other old and historical public universities in the state include:

  • Auburn University, founded in 1856
  • Troy University, founded in 1887
  • University of Alabama, founded in 1831
  • University of West Alabama, founded in 1835
  • University of Montevallo, founded in 1896

Founded in 1830, the university has gone through many changes in the last several years.When the institution first opened its doors, it was known as LaGrange College, located in Colbert County. Since then, it has undergone eight different name changes before becoming the University of North Alabama.

  • Florence Wesleyan University
  • State Normal School of Florence
  • Florence State Teacher’s College
  • Florence State College

Honoring Founders Day traditions

The UNA community gathers to celebrate Founders’ Day (The University of North Alabama)

UNA began its Founders Day celebrations in 2020, marking its 190th anniversary. Since then, this yearly event has become a cherished tradition within the community. The event brings together students, faculty, and lion fans in the Gulliot University Center to celebrate the birthday of the beloved university.

This year’s celebration featured a special activity for attendees, they had the opportunity to build stuffed lions as a keepsake from the event. In addition, UNA encouraged the community to join in on the festivities by wearing purple as a part of Purple Pride Day.

In addition to commemorating 195 years since its founding, 2025 marks two other milestones for the University of North Alabama. This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the social work academic program and the 75th anniversary of the UNA marching band.

With these remarkable achievements, 2025 is set to be a very important and exciting year for the university. The excitement continues to grow as UNA moves closer to the highly anticipated bicentennial celebration.
