Heavy rain, strong storms expected across Alabama this weekend
Reading time: 2 minutes

Almost all of Alabama has been experiencing drought conditions over the last few months but some relief is on its way.
Heavy rain is expected to take over most of the state Friday and Saturday, Jan. 8-9. And strong to severe storms could be coming with it.
The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has most of the state with a 1/5 marginal risk for severe weather but areas like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Decatur and Florence are in a widespread 2/5 slight risk.

Prestigious meteorologist James Spann says the biggest issue will likely be heavy rain with potential flooding over the northern half of the state through early Saturday morning. Some spots could see up to 4 inches of rain fall in a 24-hour span.
“The threat of severe thunderstorms is very conditional. High resolution models continue to advertise only a very limited amount of surface based instability, which will limit the overall threat. IF sufficient instability is available, there could be a few storms with strong winds. A brief, isolated tornado is possible, but not likely.”

The highest probability of a severe thunderstorm warning being issued is over the northwest and west central counties between 3PM and midnight on Friday.
The National Weather Service also says damaging winds are possible with gusts up to 60 mph expected. Hail could also become an issue.
What comes next
While drought conditions may not be completely busted by next week, the rain will provide some relief. And with it, a cold front will arrive across Alabama.
So if you’re tired of the 60s and 70s, you’re in luck: the more winter-like weather is on its way.
Lows are expected to fall into the low 30s and high 20s for most of the state next week. Highs in most spots (outside of the Gulf Coast) will stay in the 50s.
