Who doesn’t love a good sandwich? Trying to choose a “best” in just about any culinary category is difficult, but choosing a “best sandwich” in one city — let alone a whole state — is not easy.

However, Far & Wide, a nationwide travel web publication, has their pick for Alabama’s best sandwich.

Far & Wide recently published their list of the Best Sandwich in Every U.S State, and the pick for Alabama is kind of a signature item here in the state.

The smoked chicken sandwich with white sauce is Far & Wide’s pick, and while the publication gives a nod to the widely accepted originator of the sandwich — Big Bob Gibson’s BBQ in Decatur — their pick for the best comes from Miss Myra’s Pit BBQ in the Birmingham suburb of Cahaba Heights.

“Located in the heart of barbecue country, Alabama is known for its whole-smoked chickens and unique white barbecue sauce.”

Alabama white sauce — a mayo-based sauce that originated in North Alabama — now has gained national attention, with restaurants all over the country trying to duplicate it and offer it on their own menus.

It originated in Decatur at Big Bob Gibson’s, which bottles the sauce and sells it at multiple retail outlets as well as in its restaurants.

If you have ever wondered how to make it yourself, here’s the recipe:

2 quarts heavy-duty mayonnaise
1 quart white vinegar
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons pepper

Slowly pour vinegar into mayonnaise, using a whisk to work out all the lumps. While whisking in vinegar, also mix in salt and pepper. Once all the lumps are gone, place mixture in refrigerator before serving to allow sauce to thicken.
