Historic restaurant is home to state’s ‘essential ice cream flavor’
Reading time: 2 minutes

The national magazine Food & Wine recently tracked down the essential ice cream flavor in all 50 states.
Here in Alabama, they went to a historic restaurant in the Shoals to get a taste of one of the most popular menu items across the state.
“There’s an inherent playfulness and nostalgia with ice cream and then comes a geographical awareness as local flavors get mixed in and regional dishes transform into sweet and savory pints. It’s a picture of what residents care about and love — an identity in a scoop or maybe even a scoop of identity.”

Trowbridge’s Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop has been serving the Orange-Pineapple flavor for more than a century which is why it was selected for our state’s representative on the list.

Orange-Pineapple may not be the first thing you think of when you want some ice cream but there’s a reason it’s been a staple on the menu for so long.
“Until someone makes a Milo’s Tea ice cream flavor or a strawberry pretzel salad gelato, Orange-Pineapple from Trowbridge’s Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop in Florence, Alabama, will continue to dominate throughout the state. Paul Trowbridge created this flavor back in 1918 and it’s rumored to have inspired the dessert orange pineapple fluff, which has long been a Sunday potluck staple across the state.”
