How Alabama hospitals ranked in the U.S. News 2026-2027 report

U.S. News & World Report released its 2026-2027 Best Hospitals rankings, and six Alabama hospitals made the statewide Best Regional Hospitals list. Here are our takeaways from the annual report.

Alabama’s 6 Best Regional Hospitals for 2026-2027

In order of state rank:

  • (#1) University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, Birmingham
  • (#2) UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham, Birmingham
  • (#3 tie) Grandview Medical Center-Birmingham, Birmingham
  • (#3 tie) Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville
  • (#3 tie) Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, Mobile
  • (#6) Southeast Health Medical Center, Dothan

UAB Hospital leads the state, and the nation

UAB Hospital took Alabama’s No. 1 spot and is the only hospital in the state with a nationally ranked specialty:

  • Rheumatology — No. 11 in the U.S.
  • Obstetrics + gynecology — No. 48 in the U.S.

UAB also earned a High Performing rating in five more specialties:

  1. Cancer
  2. Geriatrics
  3. Neurology + neurosurgery
  4. Pulmonology + lung surgery
  5. Rehabilitation

UAB was also the only Alabama hospital named to U.S. News’ Best Regional Hospitals for Community Access list, which recognizes hospitals serving underserved local populations well.

Rehab care shines in the new specialty rankings

This year U.S. News introduced regional specialty rankings for the first time, in cancer, cardiology, orthopedics and rehabilitation. Alabama’s strongest showing came in rehabilitation, where six hospitals placed in the state’s new Rehabilitation Specialty Regional rankings:

  1. University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, Birmingham
  2. Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital, Birmingham
  3. Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, Mobile
  4. Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of North Alabama, Huntsville
  5. Encompass Health Lakeshore Rehabilitation Hospital, Birmingham
  6. Thomas Hospital, Fairhope

No Alabama hospital placed in the new cardiology or orthopedics regional rankings this year.
