How to celebrate Kwanzaa in Alabama
Reading time: 2 minutes
Holiday season is upon us – families are gathering, gifts are being wrapped, menorahs are being lit and ornaments hung. December is full of holidays and reasons to gather, and Kwanzaa is another great one to celebrate.

Kwanzaa is a week-long holiday encouraging the celebration of Black culture, family and community. Since 1966, many Black people in America have observed this period of honoring:
- the African American people
- their struggles in the United States
- their heritage + culture
From Dec. 26th until Jan. 1, family and friends will gather to celebrate. Similar to other holidays in December, the celebrations focus on values such as unity and creativity. It was established as a national holiday by Dr. Maulana Karenga, an activist, author + professor born in Maryland.
The term Kwanzaa means “first fruits” in Swahili, a language born in Africa. The holiday honors seven principles:
- Unity
- Self-determination
- Collective work + responsibility
- Cooperative economics
- Purpose
- Creativity
- Faith
