If you have ever traveled back to Alabama from an Atlanta Braves baseball game, a visit to the High Museum of Art or a ride from the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, you’ve probably missed stopping at the Interstate 20 Alabama Welcome Center across the Alabama-Georgia state line.

Located off Exit 234 in Cleburne County, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has been renovating the center since May 2025.

Famous for its “We Dare Defend Our Rights” monument, the popular off-ramp is slated to reopen February 2027.

When it is finished, the $12 million project will install the following improvements:

  • New walls, floors and lighting
  • New set of bathrooms
  • Family bathroom
  • Large outdoor vending space
  • New outdoor lighting
  • New power generators
  • Pavement resurfacing
