Jacksonville was recently named the No. 7 Best Small College Town in the country in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, placing it among the top college towns in the nation.
The ranking is based on a nationwide public vote and highlights destinations that offer everything from student life, community atmosphere, and things to do both on and off campus.
Not only did it place 7th in the country, it also placed first overall in Alabama.
More than just a college town
Since 1883, Jacksonville has been the home of the university. It’s known as the “Gem of the Hills” with it being at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
Residents and visitors have access to outdoor attractions like the Chief Ladiga Trail, one of the longest paved trails in the Southeast.
From campus events and athletics to student involvement across the city, the connection between the university and the community is a big part of what makes Jacksonville stand out.
The combination of the town’s scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and college-town energy helped secure its spot in the top 10.
A town on the rise

This isn’t the first time Jacksonville has earned national attention. The city has consistently ranked among the top small college towns in recent years, showing continued support from both locals and visitors.
The recognition reflects not only the strength of the university, but also the pride of the community that surrounds it.
Some things to do in Jacksonville that will be worth your time:
