It was a big night for the Philadelphia Eagles and with all of the Crimson Tide connections to the team, some former Alabama players were certain to play a part in the victory.

Philadelphia dominated the night in New Orleans, taking down two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs by a final score of 40-22.

Former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts was named the Most Valuable Player, becoming the third former Alabama player to ever win the award. He and DeVonta Smith also teamed up for a little bit of program history.

Keep reading to learn more about both players’ historic nights.

Jalen Hurts

Hurts had a roller coaster career on the field in Tuscaloosa but he helped the Tide win multiple championships and graduated from the university before transferring to Oklahoma.

After one season with the Sooners, Hurts was drafted by the Eagles in the second round. He led the team to the Super Bowl in two years ago only to lose to the Chiefs but he got his redemption Sunday night.

In the win, Hurts accounted for:

  • 17/22 passing
  • 221 passing yards
  • 2 passing TDs
  • 72 rushing yards
  • 1 rushing TD

That performance was enough to be named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl LIX, writing his name among one of the most prestigious groups in NFL history.

Hurts is the third former Alabama player to win the award, following:

  • Bart Starr (Super Bowl I + Super Bowl II)
  • Joe Namath (Super Bowl III)

DeVonta Smith

While Jalen Hurts has scored four Super Bowl touchdowns himself, no player drafted out of Alabama had ever scored a touchdown in the big game. Until tonight.

Hurts connected with DeVonta Smith on a 46-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, putting the Eagles up 34-0 and putting a dagger into the Chiefs’ comeback hopes.

Smith led the Eagles with 4 receptions and 69 receiving yards in the win.
