This weekend, Lakeshore Foundation and Montgomery Whitewater will welcome riders for a family-friendly event that celebrates community, confidence and outdoor fun.

In partnership with Birmingham nonprofit Little Hammies, the Everyone Can Ride – Youth Adaptive Cycling Event invites kids 12 and under to experience the joy of cycling in a supportive environment. The event takes place Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9-11AM at Montgomery Whitewater.

This new partnership brings together two organizations known for promoting wellness and inclusion. Lakeshore Foundation’s expertise in adaptive recreation and Montgomery Whitewater’s focus on community adventure make “Everyone Can Ride” the perfect example of how Alabama is expanding access to outdoor sports for all.

Making outdoor fun accessible for every child

The event is designed to make recreation more inclusive by giving children the chance to take warm-up laps, build new skills and enjoy a friendly race around a half-mile course. Adaptive cycles will be provided by Lakeshore Foundation for participants who need them, while Little Hammies helps kids disconnect from screens and gain confidence through active play.

Everyone Can Ride gives children the opportunity to:

  • Take warm-up laps around the course
  • Build cycling skills with guidance from coaches
  • Enjoy a fun, friendly race open to all ability levels

The event continues a growing movement across Alabama to make outdoor recreation more inclusive for families. By blending sports, wellness and community engagement, programs like Everyone Can Ride encourage children to build confidence while staying active in nature.

“We’re building a platform where every child, regardless of ability, can experience the joy of movement, confidence and community in the outdoors.”

Jason Wilson, Executive Director of Montgomery Whitewater

Montgomery Whitewater’s collaboration with Lakeshore Foundation reflects a shared commitment to making outdoor adventure accessible across Alabama.

“It’s wonderful to see children of all ability levels race, laugh and play together. Since our earliest days, Lakeshore has been about fitness, health and inclusion. This event fits our mission so well.”

Chris Thomason, Chief Advancement Officer at Lakeshore Foundation

The event marks the first in a series of collaborations between Montgomery Whitewater and Lakeshore Foundation aimed at expanding adaptive recreation opportunities across Alabama. Future programs will include adaptive cycling, paddling and other outdoor adventures for both disabled and nondisabled individuals.

How to join the fun

Families can register through the Little Hammies website.
