It’s that time of year! As the temperatures drop, getting up and out of the house can feel like a challenge. If you’re like me, you’ll need 5 layers and a stockpile of hand warmers. Fortunately, Alabama has some outdoor skating rinks making it a fun way to take on the cold weather!
Here are 7 outdoor ice-skating rinks that may be near you:
Skating in the Park | Huntsville
Skating in the Park is located right outside the Huntsville Museum of Art. The best part? They have skate helpers to guide you. So whether you’re a beginner or a pro, anyone can be out on the rink.

Montgomery Whitewater | Montgomery
Montgomery Whitewater features a large 5,000-square-foot rink with real ice, making it a good spot for groups and families.

Holidays on the Plaza | Tuscaloosa
Holidays on the Plaza is a known Tuscaloosa tradition. Each year the ice skating is right alongside the Tinsel Trail, all organized by the city. As a Tuscaloosa local, it’s a must-go for me and my friends!

Located in downtown Albertville, Sand Mountain Skate has a magical outdoor rink that brings out the Christmas spirit. One thing to remember: make sure to reserve a time to skate beforehand!

If you’re near Cullman, you’ve heard of Cullman Christkindlmarkt. Skating here feels just like a Hallmark movie.

Christmas on the Coosa | Gadsden
If you’re looking for a new spot to skate, Greater Gadsden Tourism announced the grand opening of a new rink overlooking the Coosa River! The rink is as big as Rockefeller Plaza’s and is located near Morange Park.
