Lowest temperatures in state so far + what’s to come
Reading time: 3 minutes

We saw a lot of blue skies over the weekend with plenty of sunshine but it was also the first real taste of Fall we have gotten in 2025.
Temperatures reached the low 50s across Alabama and even into the 40s in some areas.
Keep reading to see more about the low temps and colder weather + see what else we should be expected for the month of October.
Weekend lows

You may still be thinking about the colder weather that comes around the holidays but it’s clear we’re taking steps in that direction.
This weekend provided some chilly weather to wake up to. The coolest location recorded by the National Weather Service was 42 degrees in Oneonta.
“Between natural variability from urban to rural areas as well as ridges to valleys, noticeable temperature differences will exist, especially this time of year. So, you may have experienced something slightly different in your backyard vs. what this map shows; it involves some data interpolation but is fairly close to reality.”
NWS Birmingham
The low in Birmingham was just below the average low of 56 but still a ways away from the record low from Oct. 12 which is 37 degrees, set back in 1932. The record high for the date is 91.
Here are some numbers for how other cities compared to historic temperatures for Oct. 12:
- Auburn: This year – 47 | Average low – 51 | Record low – 35
- Florence: This year – 50 | Average low – 53 | Record low – 32
- Gadsden: This year – 48 | Average low – 54 | Record low – 37
- Huntsville: This year – 49 | Average low – 53 | Record low – 33
- Mobile: This year – 54 | Average low – 60 | Record low – 42
- Montgomery: This year – 49 | Average low – 56 | Record low – 37
- Tuscaloosa: This year – 50 | Average low – 55 | Record low – 35
What’s next
In very Alabama-like fashion, the colder temperatures won’t be a steady decline as a quick heat wave comes through at least one more time before the end of the year.
There will be a steady rise in temperatures throughout the state until Thursday or Friday before another cold front comes in. The weekend + next week is expected to cool off significantly with a potential for some rain to make its way back into Alabama.
