Mercedes-Benz to unveil new Alabama-built electric vehicle—see the world premiere April 19
An exciting Alabama-built addition to the Mercedez-Benz electric vehicle (EV) fleet will be unveiled on April 19. The new all-electric luxury SUV is being manufactured in Tuscaloosa County’s Mercedes’ Vance plant, and the batteries are made in the recently opened facility in Bibb County. Read on for more details.
Driving into the future
Mercedes-EQ is presenting the world premiere of its first all-electric luxury SUV on April 19 via live stream on various platforms, including Youtube, Linked In and Twitter. During the live stream, Mercedes-EQ experts will be available to virtually answer questions about the new EV.
To date, Mercedes has invested more than $7 billion in Alabama, including $1 billion to open the Tuscaloosa battery plant and an upgraded production line to produce EVs.
Additionally, since the Tuscaloosa County plant’s inception in 1997, around four million vehicles have been produced, with around 260,000 SUVs rolling off the production line in 2021 alone. Because of this, Alabama has become one of the largest exporters of automobiles in the US.
“Mercedes-Benz’s decision to build a battery factory and launch electric vehicle production in Alabama will position the state as a leader in a new automotive technology that is poised to dramatically change the direction of the industry.”
Greg Canfield, Secretary, Alabama Department of Commerce
Get ready for the EQS-SUV
The unveiling of the new all-electric SUV will be hosted by Mercedes-Benz executive board members Ola Källenius and Britta Seeger.
The EQS-SUV takes the familiar SUV concept and leads it into the electric age. It’s the third model based on the new architecture for premium and luxury class electric vehicles.
It combines the progressive design and comfort of the EQS sedan with the space and versatility of an SUV—the EQS-SUV has the option to room up to seven people.
The interior features stunning, innovative digital controls, creating what Mercedes-Benz calls an avant-garde ambiance in the vehicle. Plus, it has a responsive 4MATIC all-wheel drive and an intelligent OFF-ROAD driving program to accommodate wherever your road trips may take you.
