In response to the tragic events that happened in New Orleans on January 1, Mobile approved the purchase of 18 portable bollards.

According to Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s daily newsletter, the purchase is part of the city’s Public Safety Department plan to enhance pedestrian safety at large events, particularly during Mardi Gras celebrations.

“I want to commend the Council for their support and our public safety leaders for quickly devising a plan to increase safety during Mardi Gras. I also want to thank the City of Tuscaloosa and Mayor Walt Maddox for allowing us to use six of their city’s retractable bollards to ensure our safety plan can be fully implemented in time for the first Mardi Gras parade. As with every Mardi Gras, our goal for the upcoming parading season is for Mobilians and visitors to be safe and Laissez les bons temps rouler!”

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson

Mobile’s first Mardi Gras parade begins Friday, February 1st. The final parade is on Fat Tuesday, March 4th.
