Mobile is now the 2nd most populated city in Alabama after three communities voted to join the Port City on Tuesday.

3 Communities Say Yes

The Orchard Estates, Kings Branch and Cottage Hill Corridor communities  overwhelmingly voted yes to annexation. The Airport Corridor was the sole holdout voting nearly 2 to 1 not to join, reported WKRG.

The addition of the three communities will propel Mobile’s population from 183.289 (Census 2022 est.) to beyond 200,000 residents.

Surpassing The Magic City & Capital

Birmingham and Montgomery are virtually tied for third as the largest cities in Alabama with 2022 estimated populations of 196,000+.

In 2020, Huntsville became the largest city in Alabama with a population over 215,000. According to the 2022 census estimate The Rocket City has added 6,000+ new residents. It’s population currently stands at 221,933.

In his nightly newsletter, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson welcomed the new residents of Mobile.

“Expanding Mobile’s city limits to the West and bringing in additional residents will help secure future revenue and grant opportunities to support projects and improvements throughout the city. Today’s vote ensures Mobile can continue its long history of growing to the West while preventing us from becoming landlocked by surrounding municipalities. The neighborhoods that went to the polls today have made a decisive choice about their future. By joining the city, they have secured nationally accredited police, fire and EMS protection, and other public services such as trash and garbage collection. We look forward to serving these new residents as full citizens.”
