The City of Mobile is continuing its efforts to revitalize downtown streets through its “Complete Streets” program.

The latest project broke ground Wednesday morning as the city has started work on the historic Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The $11.2 million project will completely rebuild 1.3 miles of the avenue from Buthchers Lane to Broad Street creating:

  • Upgraded utilities
  • Upgraded drainage
  • New sidewalks
  • Bike lanes
  • Connection to Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail

“These improvements will make the corridor safer and more accessible for everyone who lives, works, or worships on the Avenue… Complete Streets projects like this can help spur investment and bring new businesses and visitors to the area. I hope this project complements County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood’s work to establish a Civil Rights and Cultural Heritage District that preserves and celebrates the history of the Avenue.”

Mobile’s Downtown Street Optimization

This is the second major project to break ground in recent weeks with the St. Louis Street renovations beginning in early September.

The work on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue is expected to take roughly 18 months.

“This initiative represents more than infrastructure it’s about honoring history, restoring pride, and building opportunity for the generations to come. I’m especially proud of how this project aligns with Mobile County’s Civil Rights and Cultural Heritage District, an effort led by Commissioner Merceria Ludgood to preserve and celebrate the people and places that shaped our city’s story.”

William Carroll, Mobile City Council

This project overlays with Mobile’s broader Downtown Street Optimization which the city hopes will include:

  • Safer walkways
  • More on-street parking
  • Yield-flow two-way traffic

“We know some changes will take time to adjust to, but they will ultimately create a downtown that is more vibrant, connected, and accessible. We are committed to making these changes as smooth as possible for residents and businesses. As with any project, our traffic engineering team will be evaluating the impact throughout the project so that any necessary adjustments can be made.”
