Historic Hotels of America recently published a new list of hotels across the country that have played significant roles in U.S. presidential history, and included Mobile’s Battle House Hotel among its list.

The 2024 Top 25 Historic Hotels of America Where U.S. Presidents Made History list was released yesterday, and the historic Mobile hotel was a prominent inclusion.

Originally founded as Battle House Hotel in the 1850s, the hotel has hosted multiple presidents and government leaders over the years.

Early on, the site of the hotel served as General (and future president) Andrew Jackson’s base in the War of 1812, and has also hosted the likes of Senator Henry Clay, General Winfield Scott, and U.S. President Millard Fillmore.

What likely places the Battle House on the Historic Hotels of America list is a famous visit by Pres. Woodrow Wilson.

Wilson stayed at the Battle House in 1913 when members of the Southern Commercial Congress held a Presidential Breakfast in his honor, and during his visit to Mobile he gave his often-quoted speech in which he said, “The United States will never again seek one additional foot of territory by conquest.”
