Mobile introducing new Moonpie flavor for annual New Year’s event

There aren’t many ways to spruce up a 55-pound MoonPie but organizers for the City of Mobile’s annual New Year’s celebration are trying their best this year.
Already laying claim to the largest edible Moon Pie, the event will now stray from its usual chocolate vs. vanilla debate and bring in an all new flavor to kick off 2026.
The surprise flavor: Birthday cake.
“It’s a party within a party! The World’s Largest Edible MoonPie will be Birthday Cake flavored this year — a new flavor straight from the Chattanooga MoonPie Bakery! Vanilla frosting, crispy cookie, creamy marshmallow, colorful sprinkles…55 pounds of pure happiness.”

The giant MoonPie will be cut and served during the city’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration around 7:45PM. Then, the MoonPie shaped sign will drop in downtown at midnight to signal the new year.
Earlier this month, the publication Lonely Planet named MoonPie over Mobile one of the nine best places to celebrate New Year’s Eve across the country.
“Mobile holds the award as its largest consumer after it rose in popularity as a treat to throw in Mardi Gras parades as early as the 1940s (MoonPies are way softer than Cracker Jack boxes). So, it’s only fitting that MoonPie Over Mobile is still going strong for its 18th year. It’s an all-day affair, this year including a Mardi Gras umbrella decorating contest, brass band performances, a second line parade and the cutting (and eating) of the world’s largest MoonPie.”

The celebration has also been nominated for USA Today’s 10Best New Year’s Eve Drops in the country. You can vote once per day until Dec. 1 with the final top 10 list being announced Dec. 10.
