Mobile native surprises judges, girlfriend during American Idol audition

“Secret Shower Singer.”
That’s what Bryant Thomas was officially known as before he started singing at his American Idol audition.
The Mobile native’s voice is well known on social media but it wasn’t until he got on the national stage that people got to put a face to the voice. His performance, along with a surprise question for his girlfriend, made for a memorable audition.

Thomas was introduced as the voice behind his girlfriend’s viral social media clips. Alyona would take videos of herself with Bryant singing in the background, often from the shower.
Before he started singing, Thomas said he grew up singing in the church and exchanged a “Roll Tide” with fellow Alabama native Lionel Ritchie.
To stick with the anonymous theme, the judges allowed Thomas to stay out of sight through most of his audition. He sang Against All Odds by Phil Collins, coming out from behind a pillar a minute into his performance while singing the line “take a good look at me now.”
“Your voice is outrageous… it’s incredible. Even over there behind a pillar, you can feel just so much emotion and life in your voice so well done.”

That sentiment was echoed by the other two judges.
“I think we have ourselves a hit record here. Star power vocals. And that little rasp you have is just on fire. You are all the way there and I am loving it.”

Thomas got a yes from all three judges, getting his golden ticket to advance to the next round of the reality show.
“I’m overwhelmed, I can’t lie to you… I feel like I’m hallunicating right now honestly. Like is this a projection? Is this AI?”

Surprise engagement
As he grabbed the golden ticket from Luke Bryan, Thomas was joined in the room by his family including Alyona, who deservedly took some of the credit for getting her boyfriend to this stage.
But before they all left the room to celebrate, Thomas had one more surprise, getting down on one knee with an important question.
“I told you that when we started this whole journey that you were the one for me. To be honest, whether I got a golden ticket or not, I was going to do this. My journey started with you and it’s going to end with you. And I promise you that… so can you say something?”

What comes next?
Thomas is moving on to Hollywood Week, which starts airing on Feb. 23 but it’s not clear which week Thomas will be featured on.
