For the second time, the new Mobile International Airport has been forced to delay its opening by just a few months.

The Mobile Airport Authority announced a new timeline for the project earlier this week, citing budget priorities. It is now expected to be completed in September 2026.

“We were pushing all along for a really aggressive timeline. We had to choose whether being on budget or being on time was more important. And the Mayor and I agreed that completing this on budget was the biggest priority.”

Luckett Robinson, Mobile Airport Authority Chairman

While the delay may not be completely welcomed, it certainly isn’t taking away from the excitement of the new airport. Keep reading to find out more details on the project.

Officials broke ground on the new airport back in 2022. The project is part of an effort to shift commercial airline flights to the new airport which is more convenient to downtown Mobile.

The new terminal plans to open with five gates but is designed to expand to 12 as demand grows. Additionally, the parking garage will offer 1,250 spaces + is expected to be completed by March 2026.

The city hopes the project can provide:

  • Lower fares
  • More direct flights
  • Increased tourism
  • Enhanced economic development opportunities for the region

Infrastructure work is expected to be completed by September with the city hoping the first flights will be take off in October or November.
