Reading time: 2 minutes
The University of Montevallo fishing team was once again crowned the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year. Keep reading for all the details of their back to back titles.
2022 championship
Around 200 college bass fishing teams from all over the country competed in the Bass Pro Shops 2022 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship tournament in May. The tournament was hosted at Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama and was presented by Abu Garcia.
Only one school was named School of the Year for having earned the most cumulative points out of any team in the nation. The University of Montevallo came out on top among schools from California, to Michigan, down to Texas and everywhere in between.
Back to back
Last year, the Montevallo fishing team earned the same award and became only the third school to win back-to-back School of the Year honors in the history of the sport.
“There are only two other programs that have won this title twice. To be able to do that again is a real honor and shows the hard work that our guys have put forth this year. It’s hard to get a repeat title because everybody is gunning for you. We stepped up to the challenge and had another good year.”
William Crawford, Head Fishing Coach, University of Montevallo
Big time achievement
Over the past 10 years, the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year presented by Abu Garcia has grown into one of the most prestigious, hardest to win and most visible titles in all of collegiate bass fishing.
Schools are using this to help recruit, fundraise from alumni, gain sponsors, and grow their program. The significant media attention and effort being put in by schools, coaches, anglers and fans speaks to the magnitude of this impressive title.
Dr. John W. Stewart, president of the University, is proud of the team for making Montevallo’s fishing team prominent nationally:
“The skill, industry and passion they invest in their sport is truly impressive. William Crawford and Scooter Stano are to be commended for their vision and leadership of our Outdoor Scholars Program at Montevallo. Congratulations to these student champions.”
