Closed earlier this month due to health code violations, Moon Winx Lodge and its one-of-a-kind sign is not only a part of Tuscaloosa’s history, but a captivating attraction. Everyone is sad to see it go. Keep reading to find out what makes this place so special.

About Moon Winx Lodge

Located at 3410 University Boulevard, the motel’s origin dates back to the 1920s when it was first opened as the Moon Winx Motor Court. Pickens County artist Glenn House designed the classic winking moon sign to be the face of the motel in 1957.

Moon Winx started gaining popularity due to Alabama Football legend, Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Bryant took his players to stay at the Moon Winx Lodge on Friday nights before home games on Saturday to focus before the big day. When visiting the sign it almost feels as if you are stepping back in time to a place where having telephones was a luxury. The character of this famous lodge reminds us of the days this was more than just a place to stay, but a celebrated establishment for all Crimson Tide fans.

Just this Monday, March 27th, the Tuscaloosa News reported that the sign has officially been sold. The sign has been standing with the lodge for more than 60 years, but the memories of the lodge will last forever. Some of it’s most memorable moments include:

  • Druid City Brewing Company adopting the sign’s design as their logo in 2012
  • The sign surviving the devastating tornado in 2011, despite multiple units on the property being demolished
  • Many celebrities dining and staying there in the past

The grand, but subtly sly winking moon are the hallmarks of an unforgettable work of art and will forever be one of House’s most special pieces created.
