Mobile lands new $1.2 billion ArcelorMittal plant
ArcelorMittal—a Luxembourg-based multinational steel manufacturing corporation with a presence in 60 countries—recently announced plans to invest $1.2B in a new facility in Mobile. Construction is set to begin later this year, with production anticipated to commence in 2027. According to a press release from ArcelorMittal, the project should create up to 1,300 jobs during construction and more than 200 permanent jobs once the plant is up and running.
“ArcelorMittal’s $1.2bn investment not only strengthens Alabama’s position as a key player in the steel industry but also paves the way for innovation in electric motors and renewable energy technologies.
While creating more than 200 new jobs, this project will also bring tremendous economic benefits to our state and underscores Alabama’s commitment to supporting companies that drive progress and create opportunities for our citizens.”
Governor Kay Ivey
Located near ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel’s joint venture, AM/NS Calvert (1 ThyssenKrupp Dr, Calvert, AL 36513), the new facility will include:
- An annealing pickling line
- A cold-rolling mill
- An annealing coating line
- A packaging and slitter line
- Additional ancillary equipment for specialized electrical steel manufacturing operations
Once complete, ArcelorMittal’s new facility will be capable of producing up to 150,000 metric tons of non-oriented electrical steel (NOES). NOES is a critical material needed for producing electric motors used in electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and a variety of energy technologies.
“We recognize the importance of creating a resilient, sustainable domestic supply chain for this critical material.
We also greatly appreciate the support the project has received and would like to recognize Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and Secretary of Commerce Ellen McNair, as well as the Mobile County Commission and the Mobile Chamber for their backing, which not only advances our mission but also fuels economic growth in the greater Mobile region.”
John Brett, CEO, ArcelorMittal North America
ArcelorMittal’s new facility is the latest in a series of massive manufacturing investments in Alabama. Others include:
- Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA’s $1.6 billion automotive plant in Huntsville
- First Solar’s $1.1 billion solar manufacturing plant in Lawrence County
- Novelis’ $2.5 billion low-carbon aluminum plant in Bay Minette
- Austal USA’s $3.3 billion U.S. Coast Guard contract
