The next step toward the future Academy Street Career Innovation Academy was made earlier this month.

The Troy City Schools Board of Education approved a lease agreement for the project which will completely renovate the historic Academy Street School.

The city council has already agreed to the lease with Pike County Schools, opening the door for final approval from the board of education.

Pike County Schools is expected to pay 100 percent of the utilities and pay the city $10 per year for the 50-year agreement. The agreement includes an IT office for the city in the building.

Academy Street High School served as the city’s school for Black students during the segregation era. It was closed in 1970 when Charles Henderson High School was integrated.

After five decades of sitting vacant, the campus is about to get new life. This $15 million project will transform the historic campus to include STEM and vocational programs.

The academy will be open to students from Troy City Schools, Pike County Schools and Dale County Schools. The project is expected to be completed in three different phases by August 2028.
