NEW: Boulder field in North Alabama purchased, creating climber’s paradise
Reading time: 2 minutes
A natural area dubbed “The Citadel” has to be impressive. Located in Fort Payne, Alabama, this boulder field and the surrounding 58 acres is a climber’s paradise—especially now that the Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC) and Access Fund has purchased it. Keep reading for all the details.
An “iconic climbing area”
After over two decades of trying to acquire and protect Citadel Boulders, SCC and Access Fund has finally accomplished their goal. With the purchase of the land, climbers from across the Southeast will be able to experience The Citadel’s 150+ unique problems.
“The acquisition of the Citadel Boulders is a testament to the patience and discipline needed to protect iconic climbing areas.
SCC has been working for decades to secure permanent access to Citadel Boulders.”
Meagan Evans, Executive Director, Southeastern Climbers Coalition
With the new acquisition, climbers will soon be granted access to the myriad of climbing challenges. However, they ask climbers to hold off on visiting the property for a little while. While SCC does currently have ownership of The Citadel, they want to install infrastructure to enhance accessibility. Once that’s complete, climbers and hikers will be able to enjoy the field with free access.
However, if you’re looking to get a peek of the land, you can participate in their “Trail Days,” during which they’ll scrub graffiti, clean up trash and install trail and signage infrastructure on the land.
About the property + purchase of Citadel Boulders
With dozens of sandstone boulders, the property is a stunning one—and so are the 58 acres surrounding it. In addition of being the home of the boulders, this land offers natural beauty and hiking options that both locals and travelers alike will be able to enjoy. Plus, the property is home to several rare and beautiful plant and animal species.
To support SCC’s acquisition of The Citadel, local organizations provided grants to SCC and Access Fund. Riverview Foundation and Lyndhurst Foundation, based in Chattanooga, played a critical role with a major grant. Their Director, Bruz Clark, described the land eloquently, saying, “Citadel Boulders is a magical constellation of rock formations” (SCC).
