Big news for Irondale: Alabama’s sixth Costco is coming.
During a city meeting Tuesday night, Irondale announced it will be home to the newest Costco Wholesale store in the state. This $105 million project will represent the most significant economic development in the city since the creation of the Irondale Luxury Automall.
Here are some of the numbers, according to the City of Irondale:
- $105 million projected investment
- 152,000 square-foot warehouse
- $70 million in potential performance-based incentives from Costco
- 200-300 new jobs
- $6 million to $8 million per year in new sales tax revenue
- 88% rebate cap on non-educational city sales tax
- One self-service gas station
Mayor James D. Stewart Jr. said the Costco announcement symbolizes a “stronger, more vibrant future for residents.”
“This is a defining moment for our city. Costco’s arrival shows that Irondale is open for business, ready for growth, and serious about attracting high-quality development.
“This project will not only create hundreds of jobs and generate millions in new revenue, but it also signals to other top-tier businesses that Irondale is a place where they can thrive.”

Costco in Alabama
Irondale’s Costco will join five others in Alabama, located in Hoover, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery and Madison. Irondale will be the smallest city among these areas with a population of around 13,500.
Costco is among large companies known for their higher-than-average wages and employee benefits.
Earlier this year, Fortune reported that Costco increased its minimum wage to $20 per hour and its average wage to more than $31 an hour in the US and Canada.
