New Dothan animal shelter at capacity ahead of the holidays
Reading time: 2 minutes

A multi-million-dollar Dothan pet rescue center that opened in October has already reached full capacity, a local news station reported this week.
The Wiregrass Pets Rescue and Adoption Center comes after more than a decade of planning and delays, the Wiregrass Daily News reported in October. The shelter is a nonprofit that resulted from immense pressure from the community and local leaders.
“This place is built from pure heart and hard work. It’s a dream that kept calling people home.”

Wanted: Loving homes for dogs + cats
The shelter, which currently has 400 animals in its care, is urgently seeking anyone to take home its furry residents — but that doesn’t necessarily mean adoption.
For families that want to help but can’t swing full adoption just yet, Wiregrass Pets Rescue has programs for a “Doggy Day Out” and slumber parties, which can range from one day to as long as you’d like, WTVY reported Monday.
However, because it is the holiday season, Wiregrass Pets Rescue has noted that families adopting animals as a gift should not take on a responsibility they aren’t ready for: “Puppies are forever, not just for Christmas!”
