Reading time: 2 minutes
The Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project just got a major boost from the federal government—a $550 million boost, to be precise.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced the funding today. Keep reading for details on how the money will be used.
Long time coming
A new Bayway, connecting Baldwin and Mobile Counties, has been on the docket since the early 2000s. Since 2022, city leaders have been floating different ideas and schematics of what the new bridge could look like. But the project wasn’t cheap—we’re talking a multi-billion-dollar bridge.
Enter this $550M grant, awarded from the USDOT Bridge Improvement Program, one of the largest federal grants to any Alabama project. With this money in hand, officials can expedite the loan process and break ground in 2025.
“It is hard to overstate how important today’s announcement is for the future of Mobile. This funding is a monumental boost for the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project, and we are moving full steam ahead…The benefits of today’s announcement will be felt along the entire I-10 corridor from Florida to California!”
Sandy Stimpson, Mayor of Mobile
Also excited about the grant—the Mobile Chamber, where the upgrade to the Bayway is just another step towards a more vibrant downtown.
“This is yet another big, positive thing for this area. We keep rolling them out one after the other. New airport, new civic center, this bridge. But this one has been so long in the making. So difficult to get done. It feels like the biggest of them all.”
Bradley Byrne, CEO + President of Mobile Chamber
