A Premier Place to Play

According to the city’s announcement, the new facility features eight outdoor courts, accompanied by a newly paved parking lot with space for 46 vehicles, upgraded lighting and security cameras and a connecting path to Buddy Powell Pavilion.
The project broke ground in early April 2025 and was budgeted at roughly $1.37 million, and the official ribbon cutting ceremony took place on October 30.
“This is more than just a place to play pickleball. It shows that if you’re active and engaged and your motives are true and for the right reasons, local government can still work.”

The project is part of the Elevate Tuscaloosa initiative that launched in 2019 and is supported by a one-percent sales tax increase. The program aims to strengthen the city’s future by investing in education, transportation, recreation and public safety over the next 30 years.
Players can use the courts at no charge most days, aside from times when organized events or clinics are in session. The Northridge facility is expected to attract pickleball players from around the Southeast, which would boost the local recreation and wellness ecosystem.
The Future of Pickleball in Tuscaloosa
The new Northridge courts are just the beginning of Tuscaloosa’s investment in the sport. Nineteen new pickleball courts are currently under construction at Bowers Park. This $3.76 million project is also part of the Elevate Tuscaloosa initiative, and is expected to be completed this winter.
Brian Davis, Executive Director of the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority, also noted that additional pickleball courts are planned for several other facilities across the city.
“We’ve got some courts going in at the Miller Center, the YMCA’s got a few downtown, it’s really fun just to see the whole community out.”

Tuscaloosa’s growing network of pickleball facilities shows no sign of slowing down — ensuring players will have plenty of space to serve, volley, and grow the game well into the future.
