As expected, the season’s first Arctic blast brought freezing temperatures to our state along with some snow flurries.

The extreme cold weather came earlier than usual this year, resulting in record low temperatures being set in every major metro across Alabama, according to the National Weather Service.

Veterans Day morning provided the coldest temperatures ever recorded on Nov. 11 in several cities including:

  • Alexander City: 24 (Previous record: 28 in 1973)
  • Birmingham: 25 (tied 1926)
  • Cullman: 23 (Previous record: 24 in 2011)
  • Gadsden: 21 (tied 1953)
  • Guntersville: 26
  • Huntsville: 21 (Previous record: 22 in 1926)
  • Mobile: 28 (Previous record: 31 in 2011)
  • Montgomery: 23 (Previous record: 29 in 1991)
  • Troy: 24 (Previous record: 28 in 1926)
  • Tuscaloosa: 24 (Previous record: 26 in 1953)

While there was not any accumulation of snow on the ground in Alabama like there was in places up north, there were several flurries spotted Monday as far south as Cullman.

Alabama weather: What comes next?

We all woke up cold Tuesday morning but in Alabama-like fashion, the freezing weather is not going to stick around very long.

Many spots around the state are expected to reach the 50s at some point during the day Tuesday with 70-degree weather on the way. Here are some of the forecasted highs for the rest of the week from the National Weather Service:

  • Birmingham: Wednesday: 65 | Thursday: 70 | Friday: 73
  • Dothan: Wednesday: 69 | Thursday: 74 | Friday: 75
  • Huntsville: Wednesday: 64 | Thursday: 68 | Friday: 73
  • Mobile: Wednesday: 72 | Thursday: 76 | Friday: 76
  • Montgomery: Wednesday: 69 | Thursday: 73 | Friday: 76
  • Tuscaloosa: Wednesday: 70 | Thursday: 73 | Friday: 76

So while it may be bad news for those who want more of the freezing weather, it’s certainly good news for anyone looking to attend a football game Friday night or Saturday.
