One of Selma’s most treasured landmarks, the Selma Interpretive Center, is about to get a huge upgrade. Keep reading for all the details on the $20M project.

The new + improved Selma Interpretive Center

The Selma Interpretive Center is a stop along the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, which “commemorates the people, events, and route of the 1965 Voting Rights March in Alabama” (National Park Service). Inside the center, visitors can find stories from the past through educational, impactful exhibits.

Now, the center is getting even better with a construction project that will improve the visitor experience. According to Montgomery Advertiser, the project will be $20.7M.

“This construction project marks a critical step forward for the trail.

Once completed, the expanded Selma Interpretive Center will provide a premiere experience for visitors to more fully discover the history of the Voting Rights Movement, while also supporting the local economy.”

Barbara Tagger, acting superintendent, Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail (National Park Service)

The renovations will, “expand the center’s footprint and provide a state-of-the-art visitor experience with a focus on educational programming, accessibility, and community engagement” (National Park Service). Visitors can expect to find an expanded center with major site improvements once it’s complete.

The timeline for the Selma Interpretive Center upgrades

On January 6, 2024, the Selma Interpretive Center closed down temporarily for this project. It’s expected to take nearly two years to complete, opening back up in fall 2025.
