Reading time: 2 minutes
This week, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) unveiled a new statue of Rosa Parks at Legacy Park, a gathering place across from the Legacy Museum in downtown Montgomery.
Rosa Parks’ extraordinary leadership
“This Black History month, on Valentine’s Day, there are many of us who want to express our love, appreciation and gratitude to Mrs. Rosa Parks whose extraordinary leadership inspired the whole world. As someone who had the privilege of spending time with Mrs. Parks, I can affirm that she had the kind of power and conviction that could absolutely change the world. We are thrilled to honor her at Legacy Plaza.”
EJI Director Bryan Stevenson
Created by Atlanta-based sculptor Basil Watson, the Rosa Parks statue is the latest addition to Legacy Plaza, which is currently home to a brick sculpture honoring civil rights demonstrators and a mural. EJI plans to add a statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis in the future.
2024 is a big year for EJI
Along with the new statues at Legacy Plaza, the EJI is opening Freedom Monument Park on the banks of the Alabama River in 2024.
In January, the New York Times included Montgomery to its list of 2024 Travel Destinations: 52 Places to Go in 2024 because of the new park and the many solemn and life-changing Legacy sites.
